Star Wars Legions scale disappointment

I had a big rant I was going to post here, but that's not really my style. Instead, I'll illustrate my disappointment with Fantasy Flight Game's newly announced game with two pictures. Both show Legion figures on the left, and Imperial Assault figures on the right.

If they were the same, I'd be into it. If they were vastly different, e.g. 15mm, I'd be interested. But these are so similar, yet incompatible to my taste, so I'm going to give this a pass.

  1. I had read that these were 28mm scale so incompatible, and was thinking 'whaaat? Must be a typo and mean compatible', but this is rather disappointing. They aren't 28mm at all - more like 32mm by the looks of it. Which means that the WotC range - which I have piles of - won't fit with them, either. I wonder if you'll be able to get the rules without the figures?

    1. I doubt it- not to mention, FFG games usually come with a bevy of cards and custom dice. Anyway, there are plenty of rules that can be tweaked for Star Wars games.

  2. That is interesting as I had started to hear whispers, but actually thought they were going to be smaller than the Imperial Assault mixtures. What a foolish thing to do

    1. Smaller figures would have been interesting, allowing for more large walkers, fliers, and ground defences, but I don't think there were too many large-scale battles to really make it justifiable. Individually based figures with fire team/ squad activation is a sensible choice- but if only they were scale compatible. Oh well, it's not as if I need more in my painting queue.

  3. Yeah, this was massively disappointing to me too. I was hoping to see 15mm (or even smaller) to be able to get some AT-ATs, or other things. Ive been wanting to see some 15mm jedi for a long time too!

That being said, i'm sure ill buy in :)

    Thanks for the comparison pics.

    1. I think the scope of the game is fine, but I can't see myself getting in now.

  4. That really is quite odd. You'd think (hope even!) that in 2017 designers would think about scale, etc before starting.

    1. I'm sure the bean counters had their input... It's the sort of move you pull off when you're competing with other companies, not yourself.

  5. I think this down more to license than anything and them having to be different in some way. IA is obviously a board game where as Legions is a wargame.

I am on the fence still was about to make the plunge with IA so waiting to see what comes.

    1. 'Rebellion' is a boardgame as well, which deflates any argument over semantics.

I'm sure it will be a good game, I'm just disappointed that they're cannibalizing each other.

    2. Its more the Licenses dictates what they can and can't do. Its how Monolith are doing the Batman Boardgame and Knight the skirmish game

    3. My understanding was that Hasbro is allowed to do board games, and FFG miniatures games. IA is an awkward hybrid. Im sure it's more complicated than that!

I'm looking forward to the Monolith Batman!

  7. I completely share your sense of disappointment. Legions has left a sour taste in my mouth, and I plan to give it a pass too.

When you spend countless hours painting miniatures for a certain game, you are investing in the idea that you can use these miniatures as much as possible in the future. When a company keeps supporting that game, or (even better) releases new games that let you re-use those miniatures, your investment of time (and love) is multiplied. It's a wonderful feeling. This is one of the reasons that GW was so good in its golden age: for example, you could use the same miniatures in Warhammer, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Heroquest, Advanced Heroquest, Talisman, etc.
But when a company does what FFG just did, they are telling you that they don't really care about our investment in their game. Message received.

    [End of Rant]

    1. I was really interested in what your thoughts would be- we're on the same page. I'm just hoping that IA doesn't get overlooked by FFG in the future, there's still so much potential.
