The Great War- British forces

Last year I was excited to back Plastic Soldier Company's Great War game. I've been painting it up for the Analogue Painting Challenge, and have completed the basic British units so far. This is twelve rifle teams, three mortar teams, and three MG teams; all four figures strong. There are also three individual grenadiers used to indicate assault units, making seventy-five figures in total.

I also painted up a metal general, who wasn't part of my Challenge contribution.

I've tried to make them 'pop' a bit more on the tabletop by using stronger contrasts. I think this is necessary using smaller brown figures on muddy ground! I also rebased them on washers- mostly 15mm, but 20mm for the Stokes mortars and 25mm for the Vickers MG.

I'm not happy with the groundwork colour. I tried (and failed) to match the gameboard artwork, which is a little too red-brown for my taste anyway. I'm doing the Germans currently, and will go for a more brown-grey.

I have aspirations to build a full 3D board for this, heaven help me...

  3. They look fantastic. 3D board - therein lies madness (or is it mudness)! Good luck.

    1. I know, I know... but there's something about properly sunken trenches...

  4. Very nice figures - I've a few packs of the PSC's ww2 15mm figures and they are nice sculpts. This is the first of their ww1 figures I seen painted and they look great - you done a splendid paint job on these - especially the commander. Top stuff.

    1. Thanks, Dannoc, I enjoyed painting them. I don't have any of their WW2 infantry.

  5. These are great. I'm thinking of using this tange for a 15mm WW1 project myself. Which paints did you use? I never seem to find a shade I like for the British...

    1. Cheers, Chris. I used PSC British Khaki spray as an undercoat, then Vallejo Iraqi Sand for the webbing and Brown Violet for the helmets, then Army Painter Strong tone, and Vallejo Green Brown and Russian Uniform for highlights.

  6. They look grand. I particularly love the striking red staff markings on the general, too!

  7. Excellent work! Nothing wrong with those bases. I think they go very nicely with the board. What a pleasure it would be to play with that set. Well done :)

    1. Thanks, Prufrock! I'm doing my Germans now, with different basing which I prefer. Watch this space...
