40K Tyranids: Bigger creatures

I painted some bigger 'nids as well:

The Neurotyrant has potent psychic abilities, floating malevolently over the battlefield. It has a big brain, and smaller accessory brains from lesser creatures melded to it.

Neurotyrant

The Neurotyrant is accompanied by two Neuroloid underlings.

The real highlight for me is the Screamer Killer, redux. I had one of the Jes Goodwin metal ones in the nineties. It was the size of a clenched fist and weighed a hefty packet, and I let it go about 15-20 years ago. These are the only two photos I have of it:

My 2nd edition tyranids!

I do not regret the time I spent wet blending those claws!

Then thirty years pass (!) and the new plastic Screamer Killer is released in 2023. There was no way I was not going to have this. It is massive, on a 90mm base- already over twice the size of the original, and so light in comparison!

I added some drool with UHU glue and a toothpick.

Free hugs!

  1. Wow, so many things to talk about. While I was going to say how impressive the Neurotyrant looks, the Carnifex steals the show for me. I have a soft spot for the old mini, it was the cornerstone of my old Tyranid army, the one and very model that had to be at any battle. I loved that one so much, I sometimes regret having let it go years ago. But on the other hand, I have to concur, the new one is awesome. The only thing I think I'd change is the head, to make it bulkier, more in the fashion of the original one. However, I do love your paintjob on all of them. What a set of scary monsters!!

    1. I'd love to see new more-poseable Screamer Killers, but am not holding my breath. The head has been quite divisive for 'nid players; but I love the callback to the classic.

  2. Exquisite work on those big boys, Barks! There's something truly enjoyable about painting on a larger scale. I really like the way you did the bone - what did you use for a wash?

  3. I loved my epic 40k tyranids. I was very tempted yesterday by two issues of the combat patrol magazine that made ten termagants. Just under £16 for the two magazines

    1. They're not (yet) available in Australia. Probably a good thing...
