3D printed Mirkwood

Spider attack!

I've been dabbling with 3D printing some scenery for Journeys in Middle-earth. I printed these gnarly trees from Printable Scenery and based them on 80mm bases. I was going to add Woodland Scenics clump foliage, but I wasn't super-impressed with the appearance after doing one. I thought the bare branches are actually pretty atmospheric and menacing. What do you think? Should I add greenery or not? Maybe a darker green?

  1. Perhaps some patches of darker green for extra variation? The clump foliage looks fine to me but yeah, the bare trees are quite atmospheric like that. Lovely spiders too!

    1. I think a bit of a mix will look good in the end.

  2. I think both the bare trees & the one with foliage look great - perhaps have some of both, with the bare trees for areas of Mirkwood that have been corrupted by the Dark Powers? They certainly lend a more sinister air.

    1. The whole point of 3D printing is that I can make many more!

  3. Hmm, tough decision. Each one has pros and cons. I would personally prefer some foliage, yet scarce, grey/dark... anything menacing!

    2. Do you have the ability to airbrush darker patches on the lighter foliage? It might be neat to make it brighter on top and very dark underneath...

    3. I don’t own an airbrush, but I have seen something similar done with lighter flock on top.
